More than half of commercial vehicles inspected in Lower Mainland last year were taken off the road, RCMP say

A multi-agency enforcement operation targeting commercial vehicles in B.C.’s Lower Mainland last year resulted in more than 1,600 trucks being taken off the road, according to authorities.

A total of 2,901 vehicles were pulled over and 1,610 of them were placed out of service, a statement from the RCMP said. In total, 3661 violation tickets were issued to drivers

“These numbers continue to be very concerning and represent a real risk for everyone on the roads,” said Const. Kevin Connolly, the Burnaby RCMP’s designated commercial vehicle inspector.

“While there are many commercial vehicle operators who are doing their due diligence and prioritizing safety, unfortunately we are still seeing those who are not properly maintaining their vehicles—including repeat offenders.”

In Burnaby, specifically, the data told a similar story. There were 1,399 inspections conducted, and 800 trucks were removed, Mounties said.

A spokesperson for the Burnaby RCMP said “load securement” was one of the common issues identified during the operation.

“Whether it’s a small object like a hammer or a rock that can fly off the truck deck at high speeds or just large and heavy cargo not being safely secured, it leads to unsafe situations,” an email to CTV News said.
