Maple Ridge man sentenced to 21 months for indignity to remains

A man who pleaded guilty to interfering with his partner's remains was sentenced Thursday, two days after he was charged with her murder.

A man who pleaded guilty to interfering with his partner’s remains has been sentenced to 21 months in jail, minus credit for time served, followed by 18 months of probation.

On Thursday, Mylie Andre Barron appeared by video in a Port Coquitlam courtroom to hear Judge Kassandra Cronin’s decision.

Barron’s former partner Jessica Cunningham was reported missing last July. He was charged with indignity to remains last year, after police spent days investigating a home in the 22800 block of Gillis Place—a small, residential cul-de-sac off Harrison Street in Maple Ridge.

The charge was laid Aug. 28, 2025, and police said at the time that their investigation was related to Cunningham’s missing person file.

At Thursday’s sentencing hearing, Cronin said she looked at a range of factors including Barron’s lack of a criminal record and his Indigenous heritage.

She said Cunningham and Barron were in an intimate relationship for about a year and a half, and lived in the Maple Ridge home leased by Barron.

In delivering her decision, Cronin said police found Cunningham’s remains in a freezer at the home.

She added that police later obtained a search warrant, and in September 2025 the body was confirmed to be Cunningham’s.

Cunningham’s friends cried in court hearing these details.

According to Cronin, Barron spent 191 days in custody prior to being sentenced. After receiving credit for that time at a rate of 1.5 days per day, his remaining time to serve will be 343 days, the judge said.

On Tuesday, Barron was charged with one count of second-degree murder in connection to Cunningham’s death.

He’s expected to make another court appearance on March 26.
