Man wielding knife attached to pole arrested in Abbotsford, B.C.

Police in Abbotsford, B.C., say a man was arrested Tuesday after he was found walking around a residential neighbourhood while carrying a large knife attached to the end of a pole.

Thie incident drew a significant police presence to the area of Blueridge Drive and Townline Road, near Rick Hansen Secondary School, after a witness reported the man at around 3:30 p.m.

The Abbotsford Police Department says in a statement the man was arrested under the Mental Health Act because “he was experiencing a state of psychosis.”

No one was injured in the incident, police said.

The department says it responds to thousands of mental health-related calls each year.

“Yesterday’s incident is a reminder of the important role community members play in reporting suspicious and concerning behaviour,” the statement said.
