Man arrested on 14 warrants for string of break-ins, Burnaby RCMP say

A 55-year-old man has been charged with 18 offences over his alleged involvement in a rash of residential break-ins that began in September 2023.

Shane Conrad Takakenew is charged with seven counts of breaking and entering, nine counts of possession of stolen property and two counts of breaching a release order, the Burnaby RCMP said in a news release Wednesday.

The detachment said its “Strike Force Unit” investigated a series of break-ins that occurred between September 2023 and June 2024.

The charges against Takakenew were laid in May of this year, and he was arrested on 14 warrants on Aug. 27, police said.

Online court records show Takakenew remains in custody nearly a month later, with his next court appearance scheduled for Oct. 14.

Charged alongside Takakenew is 34-year-old Burnaby resident Fabiola Diaz, who is also facing nine counts of possession of stolen property.

Four of those charges are for possession of stolen property under $5,000 and the other five are for possession over $5,000.

Diaz is not in custody, but is also due before the court on Oct. 14, according to online records.

“While victims of break and enters have to deal with the loss of valuable personal items, there is also an immense emotional toll that comes with this type of crime,” said Sgt. Aly Mohan, of the Burnaby RCMP’s Strike Force Unit, in the release.

“We were able to return a number of items to several victims, but we also want the public to know that we have services in place to assist with the fear and anxiety that people experience in these situations.”
