Man arrested after standoff on Vancouver’s busy Granville Street, police say

A man was arrested after barricading himself inside a single-room occupancy hotel on Vancouver’s bustling Granville Street on Tuesday, according to police.

Officers were called to the Regal Hotel around 11:30 a.m. as someone was reportedly “throwing objects from a third-floor window” onto the sidewalk below, the Vancouver Police Department said in a news release Wednesday.

An 11-hour standoff followed involving more than 50 police officers, including crisis negotiators.

Authorities said they were ultimately able to convince the man to surrender around 10:10 p.m.

The 48-year-old was wanted under the Mental Health Act and was taken to hospital for treatment, police said.
