Authorities are reminding motorists of the dangers of driving without winter tires after a Lamborghini driver, clocked travelling more than twice the speed limit, got double-dinged after he was found to be disobeying winter rules. According to the B.C. Highway Patrol, officers clocked the supercar hurtling 165 km/h down the 80 km/h area of Highway 99 in Porteau Cove on the afternoon of Oct. 13. The Lamborghini Huaracan driver, a 34-year-old North Vancouver man, was handed a $121 fine for failing to obey the winter tire requirement and a $483 fine for using excessive speed. He was also slapped with a $109 fine for failing to display a front licence plate, according to the news release. The man’s luxury car was taken by a tow truck to be impounded for seven days. “Excessive speed is dangerous any time, but in winter conditions, roadways can get unexpectedly icy even when the air temperature is above zero,” said Cpl. Michael McLaughlin in the release. “You are legally required to have winter tires, which have better tread and compounds that grip the road even in cold temperatures.” Winter tire requirements for select B.C. highways took effect Oct. 1 and will last until March or April, depending on whether the highway is located within mountain passes or in high snowfall areas. A winter tire must have at least 3.5 millimetres of tread depth and feature the letters “M” and “S,” representing mud and snow, a three-peaked mountain and snowflake symbol, or both, according to the province.
