Impaired dump truck driver fired, not badly injured after B.C. crash: RCMP

An allegedly impaired dump truck driver was not seriously injured after rolling his vehicle in B.C.’s Fraser Valley last week – but he was fired on the spot, according to police.

B.C. Highway Patrol said a witness reported the crash along the Lougheed Highway near the unincorporated community of Deroche on the afternoon of Sept. 4.

Responding officers said the driver then failed a roadside breathalyzer test.

The man’s supervisor then came to the scene as police were investigating the rollover and terminated his employment, authorities said.

“The majority of professional truck drivers never deal with B.C. Highway Patrol. They’re too busy working safely and following the rules,” said Cpl. Michael McLaughlin, in a statement.

“But with any big rig, the stakes are too high to be unsafe. We have no tolerance for drivers who are impaired.”

Officers seized the man’s licence and gave him an immediate 90-day driving prohibition, plus $598 worth of tickets for driving with open liquor and driving without due care and attention.

His employer’s dump truck was also impounded for 30 days, authorities said.
