As the warmer weather draws more people outside, ICBC is warning drivers to keep an eye out for pedestrians and cyclists. The insurance corporation has released a video highlighting bad behaviour at busy intersections, while acknowledging how easy it can be to lower your guard during the colder months. The video reveals some of the most common hazards from a cyclist’s perspective, including drivers rolling through crosswalks and failing to yield. Drivers are reminded to be aware of their blind spots, and shoulder check for vulnerable road users. It also advises them to give as much space as possible when following or passing people. “We all deserve to stay safe on our roads, and we’re asking drivers to slow down, stay focused and watch for others” said ICBC road safety manager Kathleen Nadalin in a news release Wednesday. The video also reminds pedestrians to make eye contact with drivers, and to avoid using devices when crossing the street. Those riding bikes or scooters should wear reflective clothing, turn on their lights in the dark and use bike lanes when available. ICBC says that 3,827 pedestrians and cyclists are injured every year in crashes with vehicles across the province, with 79 per cent of those collisions happening at intersections. “Behind every one of these statistics is someone walking to the bus, cycling to work or crossing the street with their kids,” said Attorney General Niki Sharma in the release. The province says they have invested $4.7 million in road safety improvements across B.C. in the last five years. These projects include new crosswalks, accessible sidewalk ramps and separated bike paths.
