Bystanders pull occupant from car after fiery crash in Surrey, B.C., that left 2 with life-threatening injuries

Two people suffered life-threatening injuries in a crash in Surrey on Sept. 28, 2025.

Good Samaritans rushed to help after a fiery crash in Surrey, B.C., early Sunday morning that sent three people to hospital, including two who suffered life-threatening injuries.

Authorities said two vehicles collided on 128 Street and 65 Avenue shortly before 1 a.m., with one car flipping onto its roof and bursting into flames.

In a news release, the Surrey Police Service said it appears a northbound vehicle with two occupants “crossed into oncoming traffic,” crashing into another vehicle that was heading south.

Witness Inger Colindres told CTV News she was driving her 17-year-old nephew home from work at the time and saw what she believed to be two vehicles racing down the street at dangerous speeds.

“We could see them in the distance about two blocks away, swerving in and out of traffic,” she said.

At one point, Colindres said, one of the cars entered her lane and was heading straight for her before the driver swerved back into the correct lane at the last minute.

She then witnessed the collision in her rear-view mirror.

“I saw one car hit the other, send it flying,” she said. “I saw the fireball.”

Nearby residents rushed to put out the flames with fire extinguishers. Colindres said her nephew Aidan joined that effort, and with a group of bystanders managed to remove one person from one of the vehicles.

“I’m very proud of him, he didn’t stop for a second. He didn’t hesitate to get in there and help,” she said.

Two other occupants were trapped until emergency crews arrived.

“It was hard to get to them without causing more damage,” Colindres said.

Authorities told CTV News firefighters cut the doors off both vehicles to extricate the remaining occupants so they could be taken to hospital.

Two of the patients were in critical condition and the third was in serious condition, police said.

Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton could not confirm whether either of the vehicles had been involved in a street race, but said the investigation remains in its early stages.

“While we do believe speeding was a main contributing factor, investigators would like more witnesses to come forward to piece together the timeline of events before the collision occurred,” Houghton said in an emailed statement.

Investigators are particularly interested in “the actions of the northbound vehicle and other vehicles that may have been in the area at the time,” he said.
