‘Deeply concerning’: B.C. RCMP investigating alleged child sex assault at Victoria-area playground

Authorities are asking for the public’s help investigating an alleged sexual assault against a child that was reported at an elementary school playground in B.C.’s capital region this week.

West Shore RCMP said the alleged incident happened between 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Monday outside Eagle View Elementary in View Royal, just outside Victoria.

A girl was allegedly approached by an “unknown male suspect” who exposed himself to her and touched her in a sexual manner, the detachment said in a news release Wednesday.

“This is a deeply concerning incident and our investigators are working diligently to identify and locate the suspect,” said Cpl. Nancy Saggar, in the release.

“We are asking anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in the area to contact police right away. Even small details can assist in advancing this investigation.”

The child was able to leave the area safely and wasn’t physically harmed, authorities said.

Investigators have canvassed the area for witnesses and video, but asked anyone who lives near the school and captured home surveillance or dash-cam recordings around the time of the reported incident to come forward.

West Shore RCMP said they are particularly interested in video taken “on or between” the following streets: Watkiss Way to Meadow Park Lane, Burnside Road West to Stone Ridge Drive, Newstead Crescent, Meadow Park Lane and Talcott Road.

The RCMP also recommended parents and caregivers speak with their children about staying in well-populated areas and reporting anything that makes them uncomfortable to a trusted adult right away.
