A small fire at a Burnaby strip mall sent one person to hospital Thursday night.

A small fire in Burnaby sent one person to hospital Thursday night, and police are still working to figure out what happened.

Emergency crews were called to a strip mall in the 4400 block of Grange Street shortly after 10 p.m. for reports of a fire behind some of the businesses, which are oriented toward Kingsway.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze and reportedly found an unconscious man, who was taken away in an ambulance.

Burnaby RCMP said the individual had suffered “fire-related injuries,” and added that there was also some “minor fire damage” to the building exterior.

B.C. Emergency Health Services told CTV News it dispatched two ambulances—one with primary care paramedics and one with advanced care paramedics—to the scene, along with a paramedic supervisor.

The patient was taken to hospital in “serious but stable condition,” BCEHS said.

“Police are working to collect evidence to determine exactly what happened and the investigation is ongoing,” Burnaby RCMP said.
