B.C. teacher disciplined for series of ‘inappropriate and unprofessional’ comments

A B.C. high school teacher has been disciplined by a provincial regulator for a series of “inappropriate and unprofessional” comments he made during his first year on the job.

Kylejeet Singh Grewal’s misconduct began in November 2022, according to a consent resolution agreement he signed with the B.C. Commissioner for Teacher Regulation.

The agreement, which was reached last month and published online Tuesday, indicates Grewal’s B.C. teaching certificate was issued in June 2022.

The document lists several instances of misconduct Grewal committed while working in the Coquitlam School District (number 43) during the 2022-23 school year.

In November 2022, he wrote an email to the parent of one of his students, referred to in the consent agreement as “Student A.” The email referred to the student as a “gangster wannabe,” who Grewal lacked the professional expertise to help.

“Grewal did not communicate his concerns about Student A to school administrators before sending the email to Student A’s parent,” the consent agreement reads.

The teacher sent another “inappropriate and unprofessional” email about Student A in January 2023, this time to school administrators. That email speculated, among other things, that Student A and his parent were members of a gang.

According to the agreement, Grewal also asked Student A “what took so long” when he returned from the bathroom, and advised another student not to date Student A because Student A was “not a good kid,” had sold drugs, and “would not treat them well.”

Also that January, Grewal confronted two Grade 11 students in the hallway and asked them to accompany him to the school office. When the students refused, he asked, “Are you too much of a pussy to go to the office?”

The school district investigated Grewal for this interaction, something the teacher seemingly blamed a specific student—“Student B”—for causing.

“In early February 2023, Grewal told Student B in front of class that he had no problem giving him a zero on an assignment and then asked Student B, ‘Are you going to report me again?’” the consent agreement reads.

Later that month, Grewal asked a resource teacher to work with Student B, saying he was “done with” the student and describing them as “just toxic.”

“Grewal disclosed to the resource teacher that Student B had made a ‘false complaint’ against him,” the document reads.

The teacher was also “not forthcoming” during the district’s investigation of his conduct, according to the consent agreement.

The district investigation ended with a seven-day suspension without pay, which Grewal served in May 2023.

The commissioner’s office launched its own investigation the following month, which ultimately resulted in the consent agreement.

In it, Grewal admitted that his actions amounted to professional misconduct and agreed to a one-day suspension of his teaching certificate, which he served on May 25 of this year.

In addition to the suspension, he agreed to complete the course “Creating a Positive Learning Environment” through the Justice Institute of British Columbia by April 5, 2027.

According to the consent agreement, the commissioner considered the following factors when determining that the one-day suspension and course assignment were appropriate consequences for Grewal’s misconduct:

• Grewal failed to create a positive, safe and inclusive learning environment for students in his class.
• Grewal’s conduct showed a lack of understanding of appropriate professional boundaries.
• Grewal was not forthright and honest when his behaviour was investigated by the district.
• Grewal failed to model appropriate behaviour.
• Grewal was an inexperienced teacher and has already served a significant suspension.
