Hamilton police are investigating after a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle that was being driven by an off-duty Niagara police officer in St. Catharines. In a release, Niagara police say the pedestrian was hit at around 9:45 a.m. in the parking lot of a plaza at the corner of Welland Avenue and Bunting Road. The 85-year-old St. Catharines man was taken to the hospital with “life-threatening” injuries. Police say the driver of the vehicle remained on the scene and it was determined they were an off-duty Niagara Regional Police Service officer. To avoid any conflict of interest under the Policing Act, Hamilton police will take over the investigation. The parking lot will be closed while officers conduct the investigation.
