Convicted murderer back in custody after being released temporarily in Oshawa

A convicted murderer who was released in Oshawa earlier this week on a three-day pass as part of his parole process has been returned to custody.

Durham police confirmed in a social media post on Thursday that Darren Scott Ray was back in prison.

Ray was granted a 72-hour Unescorted Temporary Absence Permit by the parole board, prompting police to notify the public about his release.

Given his criminal history, Ray’s temporary release caused concern in the community, with some residents suggesting it was “alarming.” The now 65-year-old is serving a life sentence for first-degree murder in the rape and killing of 14-year-old Darren Pepin in 1987.

Durham police Const. Nicholas Gluckstein told CTV News Toronto earlier this week that the parole board will assess whether Ray is eligible for further temporary releases.

“This process will continue down the line until either they’re deemed to be a low risk, or they are required to remain indefinitely inside a facility,” Gluckstein said.
