Suspect in fatal Bay Street shooting surrenders to police

Mohamud Abdiwali Dirie, 25, has been charged in the first-degree murder of Kabil Abdulkhadir, who was with friends when he was shot and killed in front of the Marriott Hotel at 525 Bay St on Aug. 9.

The suspect in a fatal Bay Street shooting that took place earlier this month surrendered on Saturday morning, Toronto police say.

Mohamud Abdiwal Dirie, 25, was wanted in the death of 27-year-old Kabil Abdulkhadir, who was shot in downtown Toronto on Aug. 9. He walked into Toronto's police's 23 Division detachment to turn himself in.

Police say Abdulkhadir was with friends around 2:45 a.m. when the shooting occurred, just blocks away from Toronto City Hall and the Eaton Centre.

Witnesses at the time said they heard multiple shots before a shooter ran across the street toward a Marriott Hotel on Bay Street and Dundas Street East. Police arrived shortly after and pronounced Abdulkhadir dead on the scene.

Officers entered the hotel, but were unable to find the shooter.

After reviewing security footage from the area, police said they needed more detailed witness accounts to solve the crime.

When witnesses failed to come forward, Abdulkhadir's family made a desperate plea, asking the people who were with him that night to cooperate with police.

"My brother wasn't just like my brother. He was everything to me. Everything," Abdulkhadir's sister told the media.

The victim's younger brother said the family needed "justice."

On Friday, police identified Dirie as a suspect in the case, saying they believed Abdulkhadir was targeted because of a "pre-existing dispute."

Police also announced they had arrested Abdullahi Alifarah, 20, in connection with the case, charging him with accessory after the fact to murder.

Police said a third man is wanted for firearms offences, after allegedly shooting at a suspected getaway car.

Dirie's brother, Mohamed Abdiwal Dirie, was shot and killed on June 29 in a condo near Queen Street West and Dovercourt Road, but police say they do not believe Abdulkhadir's killing was in retaliation for that event.

Dirie has been charged with first-degree murder in Abdulkhadir's death.
