Toronto police say they are investigating after a shooting victim was found inside a North York mall on Tuesday morning.

The shooting, police said, happened at Fairview Mall near Sheppard Avenue East and Don Mills Road shortly after 10 a.m.

One witness told CTV New Toronto that he heard a shot ring out and when he ran to see what had happened, he saw a man lying on the floor outside the Michael Hill jewelry store.

Paramedics confirmed to CP24 that the victim was found inside Fairview Mall and was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The suspect fled the scene prior to the arrival of officers.

Another mall employee, 32-year-old Romal Patel, told CP24 that he reviewed security video that partially captured the incident.

“I didn’t see him (the suspect) physically. He came in (with) a box and a duffel bag,” he told CP24.

He added that he heard a female voice scream, “I saw the gun,” before a shot rang out.

“I heard the shot, (a) loud bang, and saw the victim fall down also,” Patel said.

He noted that he saw the suspect, who was wearing a cream or beige hoodie, a baseball cap, and grey pants, running from the area.

Patel also told CP24 that he believes the victim worked as a security guard at the shopping centre but CP24 has not independently verified that information.
