Quick blast of winter weather blankets parts of Ontario in snow

Toronto was hit with a mix of rain and snow overnight while other parts of the province could still get up to 25 centimetres of the white stuff, Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013.

Police are reminding motorists to drive with caution Wednesday because they will encounter a mix of wintry driving conditions depending on where they are travelling.

Roads are wet, slushy or covered with ice and/or snow after parts of Ontario were swiped by the edge of a large storm system that is moving along the U.S. eastern seaboard and into New England.

The low-pressure system is threatening to severely disrupt Thanksgiving travel in the U.S.

Toronto escaped with a mix of rain and snow. Snowfall amounts varied in the GTA.

Heavy snow was reported east and northeast of the city, where snowfall warnings were issued for Kingston, Ottawa and Cornwall. Up to 25 cm of snow is possible in some communities by the end of the day.

Snow squalls

West of Toronto, snow squalls are possible for a region including London and parts of Lambton and Huron counties as cold Arctic air rolls in off Lake Huron.

Snowfall amounts of 15 cm per 12 hours are possible in the heaviest snow squalls, Environment Canada said.

Local accumulations could reach 30 cm or more if a snow squall becomes stationary in the evening, the national weather agency warned.

North of Toronto, snow squalls are possible off Georgian Bay.

Driving conditions are expected to be treacherous once the snow squalls develop.

Check flight status

People who are catching a flight should check its status before heading to the airport because some airlines have issued travel advisories due to the weather. Delays or cancellations may occur.

Advisories have been issued for flights to and from Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and airports in northeastern U.S. states.

Chance of more flurries in GTA

In the GTA, the snowfall ended overnight but there is a chance of additional flurries in the afternoon and evening.

The temperature will drop to -2 C in the afternoon and -7 C early Thursday morning.
