This plant-based restaurant is closing its doors after 10 years

A restaurant chain known for its entirely plant-based menu is closing its Toronto locations after nearly a decade.

For almost 10 years, Planta has become a hot spot for vegans, vegetarians and those looking to cut down on meat, with locations across the U.S., and two in Toronto.

But this week the restaurant chain announced on its website and Instagram that both its Toronto locations – one in Yorkville and the other on Queen Street West - will be closing for good.

“Toronto is where PLANTA first came to life nearly 10 years ago, and we’ll always be grateful to the community that helped shape this brand,” the caption read. “Despite every effort to keep our doors open in Toronto, our Canadian restaurants reached a point where it was no longer financially feasible to operate.”

On the Planta website, a statement said that the restaurants faced “operational and financial challenges.”

The restaurant chain said in their social media post that it will continue to operate across the U.S.

The restaurants served plant-based meals like sushi, noodles and rice bowls. The last day for the Toronto locations was May 19.
