A car smashed into a restaurant in Scarborough on Sunday, March 22, 2015.

A car smashed into a Scarborough restaurant Sunday afternoon, causing major damage and narrowly missing two people.

Kingsley Gilliam says he was one step away when a red Toyota smashed into a Caribbean restaurant on Morecambe Gate, near Finch Avenue East and Victoria Park Road. The incident happened at around 1 p.m.

“If I had put my foot down, I would have been wiped out,” Gilliam tells CTV Toronto.

Jerry Hoo, the restaurant’s owner, says one of his regular customers mistook her gas pedal for the brakes.

A cashier could have been seriously injured if she had been standing at her usual spot behind the counter, Hoo said.

Some microwaves and ovens tumbled over in the kitchen, Hoo said, and an employee was slightly burned when some oil in a pan splashed up.

However, he’s not too upset.

“What are you going to do?” Hoo said. “The lady came and apologized. So long as no one was injured.”

Hoo estimates there is approximately $100,000 of damage and that the restaurant will be closed for about a week.
