Hundreds of backpacks filled with school supplies were given away at a back-to-school celebration recently held by Regina’s North Central Family Centre. This is the sixth year the Centre has supplied backpacks to families it supports. “It takes a community and village of people to come together and really support families,” said Kimberly Wenger, the executive director of North Central Family Centre. “Help neighbours out and make sure everyone has an equal chance to start school with confidence and be supported.” There were over 550 backpacks prepared for the event - over 100 more than the year prior. Jan Thompson of Alliance Energy Ltd. says the backpacks and supplies will help students succeed. “They get to feel proud to walk into school and start a year with new supplies, and that’s what we want for these children. We want the best, we want them to succeed,” said Thompson. A section of 5th Avenue was temporarily closed off to accommodate the crowd of families who attended the event. Those wanting a backpack were called over a PA system to manage the large number of requests. The Salvation Army is in the midst of preparing for their 15th annual backpack program, and is looking for community support to complete the process. More than 1,300 students have registered for the program. Surpassing last year’s total. The non-profit is looking for donations to help with the purchase of supplies. As of July 31, just 55 per cent of funds needed have been raised. “If we can supply a backpack full of supplies to those children and to those families, make sure that’s one pressure off their plate, then it’s an honour to do so,” said Tim Fraser, Corps Officer at Salvation Army Community Church. The Salvation Army has capped potential backpacks at 1300 this year, a jump of 100 from 2025. Fraser said the Salvation Army has heard from families who are making difficult decisions, choosing between supplies or food. “We never want that to be a barrier. We are here to support the families. Donations for the backpack program can be made on the Salvation Army website, or in person at their 2240 13th Avenue location.
