Sask. woman says Megan Gallagher was zip-tied to chair and beaten in garage

WATCH: Court watched footage of a police interview on Tuesday in the trial of Roderick Sutherland, accused in the killing of Megan Gallagher.

A Saskatoon woman who was in the same garage where Megan Gallagher was killed took the witness stand in Roderick Sutherland’s manslaughter trial on Wednesday.

Gallagher, 30, was killed inside Sutherland’s Weldon Avenue garage on Sept. 20, 2020.

Sutherland has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter, unlawful confinement and to offering an indignity to human remains.

Cheyann Peeteetuce, 32, testified she was high and drunk on the day Gallagher was killed.

“We were chilling, getting high and drinking,” Peeteetuce testified.

On the stand, she was very vague and tight-lipped — often repeating that she couldn’t remember details about what happened.

Jurors later saw a different account in her recorded police interview on June 15, 2022.

She told Sgt. Anthony Boemsch, the lead homicide investigator at the time, that Gallagher was tied to an office chair and beaten inside the garage.

Peeteetuce told Boemsch there were about five people in the garage.

She said she heard people in the garage tell Gallagher, “‘F------ tell me’ and she was saying, ‘No, no, no.’”

“How was she tied up?” Boemsch asked Peeteetuce in the video.

“With zip ties and stuff,” Peeteetuce responded.

Peeteetuce testified she didn’t know Gallagher very well; they had only met once.

According to an agreed statement of facts, Peeteetuce called Gallagher on Sept. 20, 2020 to buy drugs.

Gallagher’s wallet was found at Peeteetuce’s brother’s apartment on Aug. 10, 2022.

Peeteetuce says she can’t remember why she pleaded guilty to manslaughter

Peeteetuce entered the courtroom beside a sheriff, wearing a grey sweatsuit with her ankles and wrists shackled.

She was asked three times if she could see Sutherland in the courtroom — who sat behind the defence attorneys. Peeteetuce said she couldn’t identify him.

Senior Crown Prosecutor Bill Burge questioned Peeteetuce about the moments leading up to Gallagher’s death.

“I don’t remember,” Peeteetuce said.

Burge pressed Peeteetuce why her current testimony differed from what she told police in the recorded video.

“I don’t remember,” Peeteetuce again responded.

In January, Peeteetuce pleaded guilty to manslaughter in connection with Gallagher’s death.

“Why did you plead guilty to manslaughter?” Burge asked.

“I don’t remember,” Peeteetuce responded.
