Saskatoon police officers surrounded the courthouse on the third day of Andrew Rosenfeldt’s second-degree murder trial.

Rosenfeldt, 28, is accused of killing his girlfriend, 20-year-old Nykera Brown, who was found shot dead on Nov. 15, 2022, inside the apartment they shared on Avenue P South.

Court heard Rosenfeldt and Brown had been dating for about a year and were both members of the Terror Squad street gang.

Saskatoon police officers showed up as former gang member Catherine Iron took the stand for the second day.

Iron appeared more subdued than she did the day before.

“The safety of Miss. Iron is now an issue,” senior Crown prosecutor Elizabeth Addabor told the court.

“Somehow information has gotten out that she had testified about Terror Squad secrets.”

On Tuesday, Addabor raised concerns about Rosenfeldt’s communication with his mother.

“Mr. Rosenfeldt has been communicating with this mother in the courtroom. We’ve had some people in the courtroom see her step out and make phone calls after certain names were mentioned during the testimony of Miss. Iron,” Addabor said on Tuesday.

Justice Heather MacMillan-Brown told the gallery she hopes people in the courtroom “have an understanding that there are potentially safety issues here and that they don’t take advantage of the information that’s being raised.”

Nykera Brown was going for a ‘lick’ the night she died

Iron testified that she and Brown had planned to go for a walk the night Brown died — but under cross-examination, she admitted the “walk” was actually a planned attack, known as a “lick.”

“You were going on a mission to do harm to a fellow gang member, correct?” defence lawyer Chris Murphy asked.

“I do not recall,” Iron said.

“Did you ask Nykera to come along on a lick, or not?”

“Yes,” Iron replied.

Under cross-examination, Iron confirmed the lick was a mission of retribution within the gang.
