Lockdown still ongoing at Sask. Penitentiary

A lockdown is still in effect at Saskatchewan Penitentiary following last week’s deadly riot.

Both the medium and the maximum-security areas remain on lockdown, following Wednesday’s riot involving 200 inmates.

Three inmates sustained serious injuries in the violence. Jason Leonard Bird, 43, was found unresponsive in the medium-security unit and later died. Another inmate remains in hospital.

As well, officers were forced to discharge shotguns to control the riot and an additional six inmates were injured as a result. Three of those individuals are still in hospital.

Correctional Service Canada says the facility is being cleaned up, as staff logged extra hours over the weekend to repair the institution.

In the meantime, visits are suspended.
