Fire ban issued north of Saskatchewan’s provincial forest boundary

A fire ban has been issued for a large swath of Saskatchewan’s north – as wildfire risk paired with warming temperatures continue to be a concern.

According to the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA), the ban will become effective at 8 a.m. Thursday, July 10 and will encompass the area north of the provincial forest boundary – up to the Churchill River.

The ban prohibits any open fires, controlled burns and fireworks within the boundaries. This includes provincial parks, provincial recreation sites and the Northern Saskatchewan Administration District.

The ban does not include ATV/UTV restrictions at this point.

As of Wednesday morning, there are 65 active wildfires in the province. Seven are contained, 13 are not contained, 29 are ongoing assessment and firefighters are prioritizing protecting values in 16 fires.

A total of four communities remain under evacuation orders. They include the Resort Subdivision of Lac La Plonge, La Plonge Reserve, and the northern village off Beauval and Kinoosao.
