Award-winning Canadian musicians Raine Maida and Chantal Kreviazuk have spent decades making music and raising a family together. Now they are giving fans an inside look at their relationship as they get ready to kick off their latest tour in Vancouver Monday night. Their new book “I’m Going to Break Your Heart: A Rock N Roll Love Story,” reveals the highs and lows of their nearly three-decade marriage. It quickly struck a chord with fans, and since coming out last month, has already become a national bestseller. “We are destined to help normalize the struggle and the authentic interactions of coupling, long-term coupling and marriage,” Kreviazuk told Your Morning Vancouver on Monday. After clarifying that “nothing ever horrible has happened to me and Raine in our relationship,” Kreviazuk said, “we’ve been together almost 30 years, he’s my person, but because when you are so in love with your partner … things change.” Kreviazuk’s music has earned her multiple Juno Awards and platinum-selling albums, and she has also written chart-topping songs for artists like Pitbull, Christina Aguilera and Drake. Meanwhile, Maida has played sold-out stadiums as the frontman for Our Lady Peace, launched his own solo career and produced albums for Avril Lavigne and Kelly Clarkson. But despite their demanding careers, they say the most challenging and rewarding part of their journey has been their relationship. Kreviazuk said they wanted to explore how to optimize their marriage, “the same way as if you hired a tennis coach, or a basketball coach for your kid.” Many of the stories and lessons they’ve learned will be weaved into the shows on their “Break Your Heart” national tour. “The interaction on stage is really a testament to what Chantal said, it’s like choosing your partner every day, having that confidence, having that security within each other,” Maida told Your Morning Vancouver. “So when we go on stage I mean we play a lot of music, it’s incredibly musical, but there is a lot of other stuff going on as well that makes it super interesting.” They will perform their first concert Monday night at the Vogue theatre in Vancouver, followed by shows in Chilliwack, Vernon and Penticton later in the week. “I love the Vogue theatre. I love the city. Our Lady Peace was just here for FIFA, and the city was incredible, it was just amazing,” Maida said. Kreviazuk hopes that the behind-the-scenes look at their lives will remind their fans that although their day-to-day may look different, they probably share a lot of the same struggles. “Keep the conversation going, because I think people go in their own head about their own stuff, but it’s all of our stuff, we are all thinking and feeling the same things.”
