‘A dream come true’: Saskatchewan hockey officials return home from Olympics

When we think of the Olympics, the spotlight is on the athletes, but it's also a big moment for the officials. Laura Woodward has the story of local referees.

Four Saskatchewan hockey officials are back on home ice after working the world stage at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Cianna Murray and Michelle McKenna refereed, while Alex Clarke and Tarrington Wyonzek worked the lines.

They were among 10 Hockey Canada officials selected by the International Ice Hockey Federation for the Games.

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) called it a proud moment for the province — especially watching Murray officiate the women’s gold medal game between Canada and the United States.

“To see Cianna Murray officiating the biggest women’s hockey game of all time — what a thrill,” SJHL spokesperson Jamie Neugebauer said.

It was McKenna’s Olympic debut — a dream she’s been chasing since she started officiating at 14 years old.

“It’s definitely the pinnacle of my career so far. Getting selected was a dream come true, and something that I’ve been working towards forever,” McKenna told CTV News.

One of her highlights was working the Czech versus Sweden women’s quarterfinal.

For Clarke and Murray, who also worked the 2022 Olympics in Beijing, Milan offered a very different experience.

“The experience was tenfold different — we could go to other Olympic events, see the city of Milan, take things in as a team. It wasn’t like life was during Covid,” Clarke explained.

Clarke worked the women’s bronze medal game, where Switzerland defeated Sweden 2-1 in overtime. Another standout moment came during an Italian home game, played in front of a roaring crowd.

“Skating an Italian home game, in front of a home crowd — that was fun to see, fun to watch, fun to experience the support that they had,” Clarke told CTV News.

She said having three Saskatchewan women officiating at the Olympics sends a powerful message.

“I think it’s a really good tribute to Hockey Saskatchewan, and all the leagues that we work in — proving that their development programs are working, because to have three females from Saskatchewan go is unheard of,” she said.

And there was little time to celebrate. Neugebauer said the officials were back on the ice officiating SJHL games the day after returning home.
