White City expanding as province approves 200-hectare annexation

The Town of White City is set to further expand, as it has received approval to annex nearly 200 hectares on the eastern edge of the community.

In an announcement on Wednesday, the Town revealed it had received ministerial approval from the province – allowing the community to annex 199.79 hectares from the Rural Municipality of Edenwold. The move includes the following parcels:

• Original Road Allowance (ORA) 52-17-17-2 Ext 0
• ORA 46-17-17-2 Ext 0
• SW 19-17-17-2 Plan FU639 Ext 1
• ORA 51-17-17-2 Ext 0
• ORA 45-17-17-2 Ext 0

“Our goal has always been to grow responsibly, and this boundary alteration helps us do exactly that,” White City Mayor Mitch Simpson said in the announcement. “It gives us the room we need to grow in a thoughtful way, with space for new homes, future development and the amenities to support a strong community.”

According to the Town, the annexation was the result of numerous steps taken over the past year, including public meetings, residents’ feedback and resolutions passed by the town’s council.

An open house was held in early November in partnership with Bright Communities Ltd., where the company presented a preliminary vision for “The Meadows,” a proposed residential development in the area.

In December, the RM of Edenwold passed a resolution supporting the annexation and allowing the request to proceed to the provincial government for approval.

Finally, on Feb. 2, the newly acquired lands were redesignated as “Future Urban Residential” in the community’s future land use map.

“The Town and the RM will continue to work collaboratively on future land use planning for lands abutting the Town of White City boundaries,” the Town noted.
