Sculptures inspired by Regina’s oldest tree displayed in Les Sherman Park

Four sculptures marked a moment in Regina's history over the weekend, all dedicated to the city's oldest tree.

Les Sherman Park hosted a moment of Regina history Saturday, with four sculptures being revealed to the public.

The four sculptures are inspired by the oldest tree in Regina, which was removed from Victoria Park in 2023. The American Elm was believed to be 123-years-old.

As part of the team to assemble the sculptures, three students and one professor at the University of Regina came together to display their work.

Students took about 3-4 weeks to complete the process. Student Julien Hamon-Fafard constructed a beaver for his sculpture. He feels as though Les Sherman Park is a fitting spot for the artwork to be displayed.

“I think people naturally want to take care of their environment, and people want a nice environmental living,” he said. “This park is a cultural hub for this community and it’s a gathering place.”

Sean Whalley was picked by the City of Regina to lead the project.

“They’ve expressed to me a lot of excitement about being involved,” Whalley said. “They really enjoy the opportunity to be part of the project and it was really great for me to have some younger, up and coming artists share their ideas and their perspectives on the project with me.”

Les Sherman Park was picked as the site for the sculptures, along with a fifteen feet long piece of the oldest tree - thanks to the city’s urban forest project.
