A man in his 30s is dead after a fire broke out in his tent Sunday morning. Montreal police (SPVM) were called around 7:50 a.m. about a fire near the intersection of d’Iberville and Masson streets in the Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie borough. Firefighters quickly put out the blaze and found an unconscious man. He was pronounced dead at the scene. SPVM spokesperson Jean-Pierre Brabant says the man was experiencing homelessness — a few tents have popped up in the area. Police believe he was trying to warm up. The SPVM’s arson squad is investigating the causes and circumstances around the fire. An autopsy will determine the man’s cause of death. Claude Pinard, chair of the executive committee and responsible for homelessness, said the city is working to prevent such situations from recurring. “The tragic death of a homeless person deeply moves us. Behind this tragedy lies a human life that deserves our compassion. No one should lose their life amid indifference,” he posted in French.
