The Saskatchewan RCMP is warning those in the heavy-duty trucking and transportation industries of a large-scale scam that’s seeing fraudsters buy truck tires over the phone with fraudulent credit cards. An investigation into a series of fraud-related incidents across Saskatchewan was launched in March. According to RCMP, the businesses impacted are generally those operating in the supply of heavy-duty trucking and transportation services, such as automotive suppliers, tire shops, and fuel distributors. Businesses who have fallen victim to the scam report receiving phone calls from people interested in buying tires, engine oil or trailer parts before providing credit card information over the phone. With the transaction appearing as approved or pending, the businesses would then ship the tires, oil or parts out via a courier. After the items are shipped, the credit card is then declined and therefore – no payment to the affected businesses. Investigators with the Saskatchewan RCMP’s General Investigation Section (GIS) have identified businesses in 12 communities across the province that have been impacted by the scam. They include: No charges have been laid in connection with the investigation. Mounties say they’re outlining the investigation to help prevent further businesses from being affected. “Investigators believe additional businesses have been targeted and are encouraging those who’ve received an order under suspicious circumstances, regardless of whether it resulted in a financial or material loss, to report it to police,” the service said in its statement. The investigation crosses provincial boundaries, with similar incidents being reported throughout western Canada.
