The Official Opposition is calling on the Government of Saskatchewan to go along with a rate review panel recommendation to not further increase vehicle insurance rates. The NDP held a news conference Tuesday morning in front of the office of Jeremy Harrison, minister responsible for SGI. The Opposition says the province is in the midst of an affordability crisis, and that drivers can’t afford yet another increase to their insurance costs. SGI raised rates by 3.75 per cent in June and was planning to increase rates by the same amount again next year. The Saskatchewan Rate Review Panel’s report released on Friday recommended against the second increase. “The one thing that this report expressed clear as day in that the biggest threat to SGI is Jeremy Harrison as the minister responsible,” said NDP MLA Darcy Warrington. “It’s clear that the only plan that Jeremy Harrison and Scott Moe have is to punish drivers with the Sask. Party’s incompetence.” The NDP said that years of mismanagement by the provincial government has nearly made SGI go broke. The government says it will review the panel’s report and make a decision on the next steps in due course.
