Those in Regina who had questions or concerns about skin cancer had an opportunity to see a dermatologist in the Walmart east parking lot on Saturday. The Mole Mobile cancer screening service has made its way across Canada since its launch in May. Regina is one of its three stops in Saskatchewan, coming off another stop in Moose Jaw Friday. According to organizers, there were over 60 people who signed up online to get a check-up. “This is a really important thing to do. Anybody that has any spots that they’re concerned about that they’re not sure of, or if their intuition just really doesn’t feel right about a spot — we’re going to get them to come down today,” said Dr. Irina Oroz, an on-site dermatologist. “We bring them on to the bus and they can show me any spots that they have concerns about. We can do a total body skin cancer screening, and we’re really just checking for anything that might be suspicious for skin cancer.” Her first time on the Mole Mobile, Oroz says that it’s a quick process, where she uses a dermatoscope which examine skin with the help of lighting and a magnifying glass, providing more diagnostic acuity. With its use, skin cancer can typically be found right away, if positive. Mole Mobile organizers have had over 160 people sign up at certain spots on their tour so far. Oroz says that this parking lot opportunity can be an extra chance for people to receive important answers about their health. “A lot of people are coming in concerned that they can’t access medical care in a timely way. We have a massive shortage of dermatologists,” said Oroz. “A recent survey from the Canadian Dermatology Association shows that we need 38 dermatologists in this province, and we currently have about 10 or 11 dermatologists. So, we are really incredibly underpowered and we need a lot more dermatologists here in the province.” The Mole Mobile will be stopping in the Walmart parking lot (240 Hamilton Road) in Yorkton on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
