Police say two people were injured by gunshots in an attempted murder Thursday evening. At around 7:40 p.m., Montreal police (SPVM) received several 911 calls reporting two people who had been shot near the intersection of Jacques Rousseau Street and Nicolas-Joly Avenue in the Rivière-des-Prairies neighbourhood. When officers arrived on scene, they found the two victims: an 18-year-old man who was injured in the lower body and a 23-year-old woman who was shot in the upper body. “According to information from witnesses, it seems that the suspect approached the victims and at a certain moment, there were many gunshots that were fired in their direction,” said police spokesperson Jean-Pierre Brabant. “From there, the suspect fled in an unknown direction.” The victims’ injuries are not considered to be life-threatening. The canine unit was called in as investigators try to track the suspect’s vehicle and police say they will be looking for surveillance camera footage from the area to gather more information into the events leading up to the shooting. According to the Montreal police website, there is a SPVM urban security camera installed at the intersection where the shooting took place, which could offer clues for investigators. There are 46 such cameras installed throughout the city.
