Former U of R students’ union faces lawsuit

The former president of the now defunct University of Regina Students’ Union is suing his former employer for wrongful dismissal. Mick Favel reports.

A former employee of the defunct University of Regina Students’ Union (URSU) is suing his former employer for wrongful dismissal.

Haris Khan says he was terminated by URSU in 2024, arguing he was terminated without cause and is now seeking damages.

Legal counsel representing URSU say Khan was let go due to a pattern of behaviour which included absences from work and not performing his duties.

They allege Khan failed to file his work timesheets properly when working from home, as well as being a part of unauthorized transactions which went to professional development.

Khan’s council said there is no evidence to show a negative pattern, as meeting minutes and one voice from URSU are being presented.

Because Khan was in a management position, he was not strictly tied to the timecard routine like other positions.

Khan’s council concluded saying much of the allegations before him are hearsay. They are seeking a minimum of $35,000 in damages.

Both sides argued their case to a judge on Friday, who has now reserved his decision for a later date.

On Sept. 25 2025, URSU filed a defamation lawsuit against Khan saying he “falsely and maliciously” published statement of the union.

A month before, the University of Regina terminated URSU’s main lease agreement. URSU officially dissolved a few weeks later.
