A woman accused in a fatal hit and run in Regina in 2023 was handed a conditional sentence and probation earlier this month. On Dec. 2, 2023, members of the Regina Police Service (RPS) were dispatched at 1 a.m. to a report of an injured person on the 1100 block of Rae Street. Upon their arrival, officers found a 25-year-old woman lying on the ground at the entrance of an alley. Paramedics arrived on the scene and rushed the woman to hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries which included skull, rib and pelvic fractures and internal hemorrhaging. The driver involved in the incident fled the scene. An investigation resulted in an arrest of a suspect in Calgary on Dec. 22, RPS reported at the time. Victoria Redwood of Calgary was charged with failure to stop after an accident that resulted in death. The 29-year-old, who had no criminal record, pled guilty to the charge and was sentenced by Judge M.T. Beaton in Regina Provincial Court on Nov. 12, 2025. According to the decision, after speaking with bystanders, Redwood was urged by others inside the vehicle to leave the scene. In particular, Redwood’s boyfriend wanted to leave because he had an outstanding warrant and knew police would be called to the scene. In terms of the gravity of the offence, Beaton ruled that because Redwood alerted bystanders, who could call for medical help, the gravity of the offence decreased. However, the gravity increased due to the fact that Redwood had consumed alcohol prior to driving. “As well, although the Crown conceded that Ms. Redwood’s driving was not dangerous, the Court finds that the hitting of garbage bins constituted reckless driving which increases the gravity of the offence,” Beaton wrote in the decision. There was no evidence that Redwood’s ability to drive was impaired by the alcohol. “Ms. Redwood has no criminal record … She has expressed genuine remorse and has plead guilty,” the decision read. “Her prospects for rehabilitation are excellent.” Redwood, who has been subject to electronic monitoring for the past 22 months, received a conditional sentence of 15 months followed by a 24-month probation order. Redwood is also prohibited from operating any motor vehicle on any street, road, highway or other public place in Canada for a period of two years. In his decision, Judge Beaton wrote that Redwood is not criminally culpable for causing the death of the victim. Redwood is culpable for leaving the scene and not giving police an opportunity to speak to her at that time. If she had stayed, she may not have been charged with any offence.
