A Saskatchewan wildlife rescue is speaking out after a Merlin was found injured in south Regina. Salthaven West Wildlife said Thursday that the Merlin was found grounded last week in a busy area of Regina’s south end and brought into their care. A small circular wound could be seen at first glance, and an x-ray confirmed the bird had been shot. “After consulting with our veterinary team, it was determined that the Merlin had suffered severe and irreparable spinal damage. With no chance of recovery and to prevent further suffering, the kindest option was humane euthanasia,” Salthaven said in a social media post. It’s not clear when or where the bird may have been shot, but Salthaven has reported the incident to Conservation Officers. “Sadly, this is not an isolated case. Each year, we receive dozens of animals that have been shot,” Salthaven said. “These birds play a vital role in our ecosystems. They deserve respect, safety, and protection, not violence. If you ever encounter injured wildlife, please contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. And if you witness harm to wildlife, report it.” According to the State of Canada’s Birds, a partnership between Birds Canada and Environment and Climate Change Canada, there were approximately 1.4 million Merlins in Canada as of 2022. They’re small falcons typically found in open forests across the country, but are increasingly common in urban and suburban areas.
