Worker who fell in Heron Road trench rescued

Ottawa firefighters and Ottawa paramedics rescued a worker Friday morning who had fallen into a trench at a construction site on Heron Road.

Crews were called to assist at around 11:21 a.m. after the worker, who had been removing temporary wooden barriers covering a trench cut into the ceiling of a utility tunnel on Heron near Riverside Drive, fell and landed on his back.

A specialized Ottawa Fire Services rope rescue team responded and set to work lifting the man up through the same opening.

Paramedics on scene helped load the man into a litter, which was then lifted out of the hole.

The man was treated by paramedics at the scene for a leg injury and taken to hospital in stable condition.
