What’s playing this weekend: Feb. 27 – March 1

It’s movie Friday on Your Morning Ottawa! Matt Demers, a.k.a. Mr. Hollywood, joins host Rosie to break down the biggest releases in theatres and on streaming.

There’s a full slate of new movies out this weekend, which means film reviewer Matt Demers, A.K.A. Mr. Hollywood, is here to offer his thoughts.

Demers joined CTV Your Morning Ottawa on Friday to speak about three new and exciting films you can check out this weekend.

Scream 7 (Rated R)

Thirty years after “Scream” hit theatres, the long-running horror franchise is back for its seventh installment, and Mr. Hollywood says it delivers plenty of suspense.

“I brought my wife, and the jump scares had her jumping and the people around us laughing,” he said. “So, yes you’re doing to get a good time at the movies, for sure.”

Franchise-veterans Neve Campbell and Courtney Cox are back, and this film follows Campbell’s on-screen daughter dealing with the return of Ghostface, the masked killer.

“We don’t know who it is, and no spoilers, but this movie takes you on twists and turns and there’s sustained substance and suspense,” Mr. Hollywood said.

“Scream 7” can be watched in theatres. The film is directed by Kevin Williamson and stars Campbell, Cox and Isabel May.

In Cold Light (Rated R)

This movie, filmed in Calgary, will also have you on the edge of your seats, Mr. Hollywood says.

“This is moody, it’s gritty and it’s this really great thriller. A lot of action in here, and you’ve got a great actress by the name of Maika Monroe,” Mr. Hollywood said.

“She’s been released from prison and she’s trying to regain this kind of criminal empire her family’s involved in. But things go wrong — no spoilers, but she’s on the run, and this movie follow her in this journey, and my lord, does she go on quite the journey.”

“In Cold Light” is playing theatres. The film is directed Maxime Giroux and stars Monroe, Allan Hawco and Troy Kotsur.

The Bluff (Rated R)

We’re three for three on thrills this week, as Mr. Hollywood says there will be no relaxing with this slice of “pirate action.”

“You’ve got Priyanka Chopra Jonas kicking butt. Her past as a pirate is coming back to haunt her, and you’ve got Karl Urban as this wonderful kind of villainous character,” he said.

This “swashbuckling action” film can be streamed on Prime Video.

“The Bluff” is directed by Frank E. Flowers and it stars Chopra Jonas, Urban and Safia Oakley-Green.
