What to know about the intense flu season as the holidays approach

As the holidays approach and many people prepare to gather, an intense flu season is looming in the capital.

Earlier this week, CHEO reported that three children died from flu related complications and the hospital says it’s seeing seen a sharp increase in flu cases this month.

To provide some insight into the rapid start to the flu season and other matters related to holiday health, Ottawa Public Health’s medical officer of health joined CTV News at Six on Thursday.

An unprecedented flu season

According to Dr. Trevor Arnason, this has been the harshest flu season in recent memory.

“It’s been several years I think since we’ve seen a flu season like this,” Dr. Arnason said. “The speed of how this hit is really unprecedented in recent history.”

While three flu-related pediatric deaths in a short timeframe are unusual, Arnason says they’re not totally unexpected. According to Arnason, anyone can be affected by serious flu-related complications which is why he urges all individuals to take precautions, including vaccination.

“Unfortunately, anyone can get serious complications from flu, and anyone can pass away from flu complications,” Arnason said.

While rapidly spreading illnesses put strain on the health system, Arnason says the system is responding.

“We have pharmacists doing vaccinations, we at public health are also stepping up our vaccination efforts and our messaging, and primary care providers across the region are helping by seeing people with these symptoms, and directing them what to do,” he said.

Is it too late to get a vaccine?

Its not too late for individuals to get their seasonal vaccine, though the time to do so is now, Arnason says.

“It’s definitely not too late, but the best time to get it would be immediately,” Arnason

While some people have had trouble booking their flu shots, Arnason says this is often related to supply challenges at individual locations. For those who run into issues scheduling their appointment, the medical officer of health recommends checking multiple other locations.

Mental health during the holidays

While the holidays can be a happy time for many, Arnason says they can be an isolating time for some, especially with illnesses going around that could potentially prevent people from gathering.

Arnason says Ottawa Public Health is urging individuals to check in on others throughout the holidays.

“We’re asking people to check on others, people who might be isolated or a little bit lonely, see how they’re doing,” Arnason said. “Small gestures can make a big difference this time of year.”
