SIU looking for witnesses to Cornwall police arrest in which suspect was injured

Ontario’s police watchdog is asking witnesses to an arrest in Monkland, Ont. last week to come forward, after a suspect was injured.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says Cornwall Police Service officers located a suspect wanted in connection with several break-and-enters at the Esso gas station on Highway 138 in Monkland on Nov. 13, at around 3:30 p.m.

“During his arrest, there was an interaction between officers and the man,” the SIU said. “The man was taken to hospital, treated and released into police custody.”

The man’s injuries were not life-threatening, according to the SIU.

The SIU says it is aware of several bystanders who witnessed the arrest and is asking that they contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at: https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php

The Cornwall Police Service says the man was wanted in connection with several break-ins dating back to September, at homes and businesses in the area.

Police allege the man resisted arrest and assaulted an officer on Nov. 13 before being taken into custody.

“While being taken into custody, the man sustained injuries that required medical attention,” Cornwall police said. “The CPS subsequently notified the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which invoked its mandate.”

The accused, who was not named by the Cornwall Police Service nor the SIU, is facing a list of charges including several counts of breaking and entering, failing to comply with release and probation orders, and driving while prohibited, as well as charges of shoplifting, assaulting a peace officer, resisting a peace officer, and weapon possession.
