King Charles and Queen Camilla wrapped up their 24-hour, whirlwind visit to Ottawa Tuesday afternoon. Large crowds gathered along Wellington Street and around the National War Memorial to witness the pomp and pageantry of the royal visit, which included a military parade, a visit to the National War Memorial and King Charles presenting the speech from the throne. Whirlwind trip wraps up That’s a wrap on the two day royal visit to Ottawa by King Charles and Queen Camilla. The trip was highlighted by large crowds on Monday at Lansdowne and Rideau Hall and crowds along Wellington Street on Tuesday. 1:15 p.m. Departing Ottawa A Canadian government plane carrying King Charles and Queen Camilla departed the Ottawa International Airport. Their Majesties wrap up the 24-hour visit to Ottawa. 12:52 p.m. – Greeting Ottawa Police officers King Charles and Queen Camilla are taking time to speak with Ottawa Police Service officers who have escorted the royals around Ottawa over the last 24 hours. The officers presented King Charles with an Ottawa Police Service Traffic Escort and Enforcement Unit challenge coin. The coin recognized the King as an honourary member of the specialized motorcycle unit that escorts heads of state and other visiting dignitaries. 12:50 p.m. - Ottawa Airport King Charles and Queen Camilla have arrived at the Ottawa Airport. Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture Steven Guilbeault is at the airport. There is also a departure guard of 25 members of the Royal Canadian Dragoons. 12:43 p.m. “A Big Success” The royal visit wraps up after approximately 24 hours in Ottawa, the first visit to Canada as King for Charles. “This was a really impactful visit on a personal basis. This was an opportunity for him to really reconnect with Canada, to reset his relationship,” Richard Berthelsen, CTV News; royal commentator, told CTV News. Departing downtown Ottawa King Charles and Queen Camilla are departing downtown Ottawa after a whirlwind 24-hour visit to the capital. The King waved to cheering crowds around the National War Memorial before entering a vehicle. The motorcade will travel from downtown Ottawa to the Ottawa International Airport. 12:07 p.m. - National War Memorial King Charles and Queen Camilla are now attending a wreath laying ceremony at the National War Memorial. This year is the 25th anniversary of the repatriation of the unknown soldier. A bugler will play the Last Post, followed by a moment of silence. Members of the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment are at the National War Memorial for the ceremony. 11:58 - Wellington Street King Charles and Queen Camilla are now leaving the Senate of Canada Building. They are greeting well-wishers along Wellington Street, where a large crowd remains. They will join Governor General Mary Simon and Prime Minister Mark Carney at the National War Memorial. 11:30 a.m. – Throne speech The speech from the throne has discussed trade, Canada-U.S. relations and new tools for border agents and the RCMP. King Charles said, “Canada has dramatically changed.” “Today, Canada faces another critical moment. Democracy, pluralism, the rule of law, self-determination and freedom are values which Canadians hold dear, and ones which the government is determined to protect.” The King concluded the speech, “As the anthem reminds us, the true north is indeed strong and free.” 11:08 a.m. Speech from the throne King Charles is now presenting the speech from the throne, outlining the Liberal government’s priorities for the 45th session of Parliament. 10:35 am. - Arrival in the Senate King Charles and Queen Camilla are now in the Senate ahead of the speech from the throne. Former prime ministers Justin Trudeau and Stephen Harper are in the Senate, along with former governors general Adrienne Clarkson, Michaelle Jean and David Johnston. 10:18 a.m. – King and Queen enter the Senate King Charles and Queen Camilla have entered the Senate of Canada building. His Majesty will deliver the speech from the throne at 11 a.m. 10:10 a.m. Royal Salute King Charles and Queen Camilla receive the Royal Salute from the 100-person guard of honour from the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment, along with a 21-gun salute. The Royal Salute is a formal military honour reserved for members of the Royal Family or heads of state. 10:03 a.m. – Military parade and procession begins A horse-drawn landau carrying King Charles and Queen Camilla is travelling along Wellington Street, in front of Parliament Hill. The landau is accompanied by 28 horses from the RCMP Musical Ride – 14 horses before and 14 horses after. 10 a.m. The scenes of downtown Ottawa CTV News Ottawa’s Katie Griffin reports crowds have gathered along Wellington Street ahead of the arrival of King Charles and Queen Camilla. 9:45 a.m. – 21-gun salute and a fly-past The City of Ottawa says there will be a gun salute outside the Senate of Canada Building at 10:15 a.m. Between 12 and 12:30 p.m., the Royal Canadian Air Force will conduct a fly-past over the National War Memorial. 9:30 - Guard of Honour arrives The 100-person guard of honour from the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment arrived outside the Senate of Canada Building. 9:20 a.m. - sunshine and warm temperatures for Royal Visit The sunshine and warm temperatures arrived in Ottawa in time for the royal visit. Ottawa saw eight straight days of below-seasonal temperatures. Large crowds continue to gather along Wellington Street ahead of the parade and speech from the throne. 9 a.m. – Crowds in downtown Ottawa A crowd gathers at the intersection of Metcalfe and Wellington ahead of the military parade and procession with King Charles and Queen Camilla. People have lined up along the barricades set up on Wellington Street, and police have closed the area to vehicle traffic. 8:37 a.m. OC Transpo service Several bus routes are being rerouted through downtown Ottawa today due to the Royal visit. OC Transpo says there are no planned service changes on O-Train Line 1 through downtown Ottawa this morning. 8:20 a.m. - The view of downtown Ottawa A look at Wellington Street outside the Senate of Canada Building ahead of the military procession and pageantry around the speech from the throne. 7:45 a.m. - Increased security downtown There is a noticeable police presence in downtown Ottawa this morning ahead of the appearance of King Charles and Queen Camilla. Concrete barriers, police cruisers and City of Ottawa trucks are positioned at intersections. Crowds begin to gather Royal watchers began lining Wellington Street by 6 a.m. for a chance to see King Charles and Queen Camilla. Several people were lined up along Wellington Street next to the Senate of Canada Building, where security gates have already been installed. The State laudau King Charles and Queen Camilla will travel along Wellington Street in the State laudau, escorted by 28 horses from the RCMP Musical Ride. Fourteen horses will march before the laudau, and 14 horses will march after. According to Canadian Heritage, the State landau is used to carry ambassadors, heads of state and governments, the Governor General, and members of the Royal Family for ceremonial events. This is the first time the RCMP has used this laudau. The carriage was built in the 1800s but was discovered in a dilapidated state in St. Isidore, Que. before a Quebec man decided to refurbish it and donate it to the RCMP Musical Ride. Queen Elizabeth II delivered the speech from the throne in 1977 as part of her Silver Jubilee Tour. Today’s itinerary 9:50 a.m. – Wellington Street King Charles and Queen Camilla will travel on Wellington Street from the Bank of Canada to the Senate of Canada Building. Their Majesties will travel on Canada’s State Landau, escorted by horses of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Musical Ride. The public is invited to greet the King and Queen along Wellington Street. 10:15 a.m. Senate of Canada Building King Charles will receive full military honours at the Senate of Canada Building.
