Photo radar speed cameras coming to Renfrew County

Three photo radar cameras are set to be installed in Renfrew County. CTV’s Dylan Dyson has the details.

Three photo radar speed cameras are set to be installed in communities across Renfrew County.

The cameras will be installed in high-risk school zones identified by the county in the following areas:

• Renfrew: Raglan Street South, near St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic School
• Petawawa: Petawawa Boulevard, near Pine View Public School
• Laurentian Valley: Round Lake Round, near Rockwood Public School

Fines for speeders caught by the cameras will be in line with the Highway Traffic Act, with money going back to the County of Renfrew.

Signs notifying drivers of the speed cameras coming to the above areas need to be posted 90 days before the cameras are installed. Signs have already gone up in Renfrew.

Renfrew residents living in the Raglan Street area say they are on board with the speed cameras being installed.

“You do have people that are travelling in from outside the community trying to get to where they’re going, and it tends to end up being a speedway,” says Sean Donaghy, who lives beside the crosswalk on Raglan Street, which was identified as a high-risk area.

“There’s been multiple incidents where children have been hit by cars that disregard the crosswalk and have been traveling at too high a speed.”

“The speed limit is 40, they go 60,” adds Beverley Chapman, who lives beside the crosswalk as well.

“We’re just a quiet community and we don’t need this racing around. Even if I go the speed limit, if somebody’s behind me that’s pushing me to go faster, and then when I turn, they speed right up,” she says.
