Passenger extricated from vehicle following collision with salt truck

Ottawa firefighters helped free a trapped passenger from their vehicle following a collision involving a commercial salt truck on the westbound off-ramp of Highway 417 at Boundary Road on Friday.

Firefighters say they responded to reports of a collision in which multiple people were possibly trapped in their vehicle shortly after 11:30 a.m.

Fire crews arrived to find that a four-door sedan suffered significant damage to the passenger side following a collision with a commercial salt truck, and all airbags in the car had been deployed.

“Four occupants were inside the vehicle on arrival, with only the driver able to exit independently,” Nick DeFazio, Ottawa Fire Services Public Information Officer, said.

DeFazio says the front passenger and the two rear passengers managed to exit on their own, but one occupant remained and was unable to remove themselves from the car.

“Firefighters stabilized the vehicle and charged a hose line as a precaution before beginning extrication operations,” DeFazio said. “A Firefighter accessed the sedan through the driver’s side to assess and provide care to the trapped occupant, including injury management and warming with a blanket.”

Firefighters used hydraulic tools to remove the rear-door on the driver’s-side and safely extricated the passenger shortly after noon.

Ottawa paramedics say they assessed five individuals following the collision and transported four of them to hospital in stable condition.
