Ottawa firefighters stop major water leak at long-term care home

Ottawa firefighters responded to a flooding incident at a long-term care home in Barrhaven over the weekend, helping to stop a major leak.

In a social media post, Ottawa Fire Services said they responded to reports of a large water leak on the second floor of Carleton Lodge shortly after 2:30 on Saturday. According to firefighters, there were concerns that part of the ceiling would collapse because of the leaks. The building’s maintenance had been called, but none were on site.

Fire crews found that seven rooms on the first floor had flooded. After locating the source of the leak, crews created a “catch-basin system” to redirect water out of windows while they worked to control the leak.

Firefighters managed to shut off the water and stop the leak.

“Once the leak was stopped, crews removed toilets to use as temporary drains and worked systematically, room by room and throughout hallways, to remove standing water,” Ottawa Fire Services wrote.

On Monday, officials said no residents at Carleton Lodge needed to be relocated from the facility.

“Beds were delivered from the Peter D. Clark Centre, and additional space was secured within Carleton Lodge, allowing residents to remain on site,” officials said.

The City of Ottawa also dispatched a 26-foot truck which firefighters used to transport 10 beds and mattresses for the displaced residents.

Ottawa firefighters say they were on the scene until nearly 11 p.m.
