Ottawa Fire Services is warning residents that no ice is safe ice after a rescue team had to help get a dog out of the Jock River over the weekend. A call to 9-1-1 at around 5:05 p.m. on Sunday reported a golden retriever had fallen through the ice near McBean Street in Richmond and was struggling to keep its head above water. An Ottawa Fire Services ice rescue team arrived and found the dog clinging to an ice shelf about four metres from the shore. “Ice Rescue technicians quickly suited up and conducted a go-rescue. Crews were able to safely reach the dog and remove it from the freezing water at 5:14 p.m., less than 15 minutes after the initial 9-1-1 call was received,” said public information officer Nick DeFazio in a post on X. “With warmer temperatures expected across Ottawa, including highs near 14 C today, Ottawa Fire Services is reminding residents that ice conditions on rivers, ponds, and waterways are extremely unstable this time of year. Residents are urged to keep pets on a leash near waterways and to avoid allowing them onto ice-covered surfaces.” If a pet does fall through ice, owners are reminded to call 9-1-1 immediately and to not attempt a rescue themselves. “Keep your eyes on your pet so crews can locate them quickly. Our response times are fast, and our Ice Rescue Teams are highly trained and equipped for these situations. Calling 9-1-1 right away gives you and your pet the best chance of survival,” DeFazio said.
