Ottawa firefighters help extricate driver, dog from vehicle rollover

Ottawa firefighters helped extricate a driver and a dog from a vehicle that had rolled over near the Central Experimental Farm Monday night.

The vehicle had rolled onto its side at the intersection of Tunis Avenue and the National Capital Commission Scenic Pathway at around 8:45 p.m.

Ottawa Fire Services public information officer Nick DeFazio said firefighters stabilized the vehicle and were able to get the driver and dog out through the sunroof.

“Firefighters established a medical sector and began assessing and treating the driver. A firefighter on scene, who is also a trained veterinarian, assessed the dog and confirmed it was not injured,” DeFazio said in a post on X.

Ottawa paramedics said the driver was a woman in her 20s, who was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

It was the second extrication call within the same hour Monday night, DeFazio said.

About 15 minutes prior, firefighters were called to the intersection of Nanaimo Drive and Richmond Road for a two-vehicle collision with some passengers trapped in one of the vehicles.

“Using specialized hydraulic tools, firefighters removed the heavily damaged passenger-side door to gain access. Extrication began at 20:41 and the occupant was safely removed from the vehicle at 20:45,” DeFazio said.

Ottawa paramedics said neither of the crashes resulted in any serious injuries to the people involved.

Firefighters then disconnected the batteries in both vehicles and applied absorbent to leaking fluids before clearing the scene.
