Ottawa firefighters free child trapped in concrete hole

Ottawa firefighters helped free a child whose foot got stuck inside a concrete hole at a school in Barrhaven Tuesday afternoon.

The Ottawa Fire Services say they were called to a school in the 200 block of Tartan Drive near Standherd Drive at approximately 4:07 p.m. after a child stepped into a concrete hole previously used as a fence post and could not get out.

Firefighters found the five-year-old trapped “up to the knee” inside a narrow concrete opening.

“Crews quickly went to work, carefully digging around the area to expose more of the concrete before using chisels and a pry bar to safely break away the cement surrounding the child’s leg and foot,” Ottawa firefighters said in a post to social media.

Crews were able to successfully free the child about half an hour later.

Firefighters say the child was medically assessed but was not injured.
