Man charged for driving impaired, street racing on Hwy. 417 in Ottawa

Ontario Provincial Police laid multiple charges against a 28-year-old man for allegedly racing and driving impaired on Highway 417 in Ottawa over the weekend.

Police say officers were called about a crash on the highway near Innes Road shortly after 7 p.m. Sunday.

Witnesses told police they had seen the driver racing another vehicle when he lost control of his car from failing to make the curve at the Highway 174 and 417 split, OPP said in a news release Monday.

The driver was transported to hospital with minor injuries.

Police say he had been allegedly consuming alcohol and registered more than twice the legal drinking limit. Officers allegedly also found alcohol and cannabis inside the vehicle.

The man was arrested on two charges related to impaired driving, dangerous operation, racing and failing to properly wear a seatbelt.

He had his driver’s licence suspended for 90-days and received an automatic 30-day driving suspension.

He is set to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Ottawa at a later date.
