Ninety-four employees at Library and Archives Canada have received notices that their jobs could be at risk, as part of the federal government’s plan to cut the size of the federal public service by 2029. More than 24,000 public servants have received workforce adjustment notices in 33 departments over the past three months. The Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat’s online tracker outlining workforce adjustments shows 90 employees and four executives at Library and Archives Canada received notices in February that their jobs are affected by the workforce adjustment. The Public Service Alliance of Canada said 82 of its members received notices at Library and Archives Canada on Feb. 4, while nine members of the Canadian Association of Professional Employees received notices. According to the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat, a total of 53 employees and three executive positions will be reduced as part of the workforce adjustment. Last September, Library and Archives Canada said a workforce adjustment (WFA) process would result in the loss of approximately 70 indeterminate positions over the next several months. Notices have been issued to 24,188 employees and executives in 27 core departments in the federal public service. The Treasury Board website shows 8,706 employees and 465 executive positions will be cut as part of the comprehensive expenditure review in those departments. The Canada Strong Budget 2025, released in November, outlined the federal government’s plan to reduce the size of the federal public service by 28,000 positions by 2029, with 16,000 full-time equivalent positions eliminated through the comprehensive expenditure review, while 12,000 positions, including 350 executive positions, will be eliminated mainly through attrition and early retirement packages. For departments outside the core public service, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has told CTV News Ottawa 587 positions will be cut in its department. The Parole Board of Canada will eliminate 37 positions. A total of 196 notices were issued to employees at the National Research Council in January.
