Hockey fans boo U.S. national anthem at Ottawa Senators game after Trump imposes tariffs

Ottawa Senators fans were quick to voice their displeasure with the United States on Saturday after U.S. president Donald Trump announced his plan to impose tariffs on Canadian goods.

During the playing of the Star-Spangled Banner before the Senators took on the Minnesota Wild, a large faction of the stadium was heard loudly booing. Video posted to social media also showed other fans clapping and cheering.

It comes only hours after Trump signed an executive order slapping 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian imports, marking a major shift in Canada-U.S. relations.

Canadian officials have warned for months that the impact of the tariffs could devastate the economy and cost thousands of jobs. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to announce counter-tariffs.

Federal and provincial governments have been co-ordinating for several weeks on a retaliation plan, and have been engaging with and leveraging stakeholders as part of a broader “Team Canada” approach.

The tariffs are expected to take effect on Tuesday.
